When we were kids, my sister and I used to blow bubbles for hours in the summer, fascinated by their rainbow patterns. We played a game that each bubble was its own universe of swirling color, and that time there ran slowly so that an eternity would elapse before the bubble popped. Later in an undergrad physics course we analyzed thin film interference to great extent, learning how each color of the rainbow experiences constructive interference for a different thickness of soap film, and how the liquid flows on the surface of the bubble in swirling currents of color. But despite now fully understanding these beautiful rainbow patterns, they seem no less magical to me.
